Tradeshow user research for Nexperia's Interactive Datasheets

Groundbreaking innovation in the field of semiconductors

Nexperia is a leading semiconductor manufacturer specializing in discrete, logic, and MOSFET devices. Developed by our partners TRIMM and Nexperia, GriDD was asked to improve the user experience of their recently developed interactive datasheets by testing the tool at PCIM Europe, a leading event for power electronics.

These sheets help engineers by using easy-to-use sliders to adjust parameters in real-time, making it easier to evaluate device behavior compared to traditional datasheets that need manual calculations or simulations.

The interactive datasheets have since been nominated for several awards, winning two Golden DIA Awards in the categories Disrupter and Tools, and one Silver DIA Award in the category Service.

Datasheets

In electronic design, engineers use datasheets, but traditional ones require a lot of time for calculations or simulations and don’t always include accurate temperature models, which slows down productivity.

Nexperia solved these problems by creating interactive datasheets with a dynamic graphical interface. Engineers can adjust settings like voltage, current, and temperature in real-time and immediately see the effects. This new approach removes the need for manual calculations and complex simulations, making the design process easier and faster.

Design

Based on Nexperia’s initial design, GriDD refined the concept by making it suitable for web use while still maintaining the look and feel of the traditional datasheet. This was to make sure it was easy for engineers to use and felt familiar to them.

Real-World Feedback and Insights

After multiple iterations, the final design was further developed into a fully functional product by our long-time partner TRIMM.

After completing the initial development, we attended PCIM Europe, a leading international exhibition and conference for Power Electronics, to get real-world feedback.

At the event, we tested the interactive datasheets with users. This helped us see how engineers used the tool and where we could make it better. Our goal was to understand their experience, find any problems, and get ideas for improvements.

Key Findings

  • Competitive Edge: Users described the new datasheet as “leading-edge” with “innovative features,” helping the client stand out in the market.
  • Efficiency: The datasheet saves significant time and is highly valuable for engineers and designers looking for a streamlined way to evaluate and select the best components for their projects.
  • Users proposed new features like comparing devices and recommending products.
  • Users also raised the importance of understanding where data comes from to be able to trust the interactive datasheet.

The positive reception and constructive feedback led to further refinements, paving the way for future enhancements and broader implementation across Nexperia’s product portfolio.

2x Gold and 1x Silver: Dutch Interactive Awards

Recently, the interactive datasheets have won two Golden DIA Awards in the categories of Disrupter and Tools, and one Silver DIA Award in the category Service. The jury praised the interactive datasheets as “disruptive, innovative, and user-friendly”. The recognition for user-friendly datasheets underscores the importance GriDD places on accessibility and usability, demonstrating our dedication to creating solutions that meet and exceed user’s needs.

The Dutch Interactive Awards (DIA) celebrate the best interactive work by Dutch creators, judged on concept, design and UX, results, and optimization.

What do we find so interesting about this project?

What we really enjoyed about the project was the opportunity to showcase the tool at a trade show for real-world testing. This opportunity was incredibly rewarding because it allowed us to directly interact with users. Seeing engineers engage with the tool and provide genuine feedback was invaluable. It reinforced the importance of user-centric design and highlighted how our work at GriDD can make a tangible difference in improving productivity and user satisfaction.
